MYJC Christmas Party
It was incredible to watch the faces of some of Melbourne's toughest young men in late December 2009, when Concern Australia's InsideOut team brought the joy of Christmas to those living in the Melbourne Youth Justice Centre at Parkville.
Many of these young men understandably have a hard time at Christmas time, as a significant proportion receive few or no Christmas presents, and many less receive family support or a visit at Christmas time.
The event, organized by Inside Out’s own Chris Dickson and Sophal Uoy, hosted close to 80 young people, and 40 staff as well as members of God’s Squad Motorcycle Club.
The day included a BBQ, a relay race put on by the YMCA, and several bands including Amusica, The Rash, and hip-hop artists MarkIA, Homebase and Chris Dickson’s performed as Phenomena for the boys as well.
The young men were given a gift package which included an Adidas cap and drink bottle, a T-shirt donated by Box Canyon at The Pines and they were also each given a Christmas card and stamp to write to family or friends, donated by Rotary Club of Forrest Hill.
“The event went exceptionally well; the guys were responsive and very grateful for the gifts,” event organiser Chris Dickson said.
“It provided an opportunity to speak with the guys one on one and the chance to offer them the generosity and support that Christ would,” Chris said.
