Secondary Topics
Secondary school students face specific challenges as they develop towards adulthood. Teenagers are bombarded with messages from the media, family, school and peers – how can they interpret these messages and make informed choices about issues which will affect their life?
Values For Life School Seminars provide a powerful values-based program to assist students in their social and emotional development. The seminars are designed to help students think about and question issues and values in today’s culture in a relevant, exciting, reflective learning experience.
Some current topics include:
- Sex, Love and Relationships
- What does popular culture dictate to us about relationships and sex?
- When is the right time? What does a relationship require of me?
- Some personal stories of decisions in relationships
- Life according to Ralph, Jackass & FHM (Maleness and Identity)
- Explores influences that affect a man’s identity eg media, family, peers
- Considers stereotypes within the media regarding masculinity
- Explores how women want to be treated, healthy expression of sexuality and some of the potential pitfalls
- Life according to Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly (Femaleness and Identity)
- Examines the message of women's magazines in relation to what a woman should be like
- Discusses issues such as unattainable body image, unhelpful and untruthful information about sex, and society’s obsession with looks
- Explores the need for women to focus on their character rather than be obsessed with the external

- Encouraging VCE students to gain and/or keep perspective during the pressure of secondary school ending
- Exploring not only practical tools, but big picture issues for the purposes of engendering hope and resilience
- Caring enough to connect - community & friendship
- Exploring the issues of loneliness, neglect and friendship
- Increases students' awareness of social isolation and that one doesn't have to be a 'friend' to change that status
- Abuse, Bullying and Disregard
- Considers how we treat each other
- Identifies and explores the roles of the bully, the victim and the onlooker
- Encourages students to put into practice the idea of “treating others as we wish to be treated,” and the potential impact on others
- Life After V.C.E.
- What am I going to do with my life now?
- What if I’ve blown it?
- How do I know if I’ve chosen the right path?
- Is there a role for me to play in this society?
- Peer Group Pressure and Identity
- How is our identity formed?
- What role do families, peers and the media play in formulating identity and maintaining a healthy self esteem?
- What messages do the media send to young people about what they should be, look and act like?
- Coping with Difficult Emotions
- Develops strategies of coping with stress, grief and depression
- Explores the negative and positive effects of different emotions
- Looks at self-talk and encourages developing supportive networks
- Things that matter most
- Do money, fame, sex and image bring satisfaction in life?
- Why are people who seem to have all these things still unsatisfied?
- Developing priorities in life through beliefs, values and identity
- MMM - Media & Marketing Mayhem
- Helping students maintain a healthy sense of self and deconstruct the tactical manipulation of the media machine.
- Worldview or Wheelbarrow?
- Equipping students to develop a more holistic framework for decision making, particularly in dealing with the complexities and compartmentalism of a post-modern world.
