HBT Course
Hand Brake Turn gives young people a break, providing ‘hands-on’ learning, personal support and links to future employment. It offers participants a chance to get their life on track, and an opportunity realise their goals. Young people are welcome to register their interest.
Hand Brake Turn focuses on young people aged 15-19 who are:
- registered as ‘Looking for Work’ with Centrelink
- seeking a career in the automotive industry
- determined to gain an apprenticeship/traineeship
- committed to making a positive change to succeed in the future.

Hand Brake Turn is a structured 8 week accredited and registered training program designed to increase participants’ employability and opportunities to enter the automotive industry.
Each HBT Centre runs 4 or 5 courses per year with each course accepting up to 18 participants.
The program offers hands-on training in:
- Motor Mechanics
- Spray Painting
- Detailing
- Panel Beating
Other areas covered include:
- Workshop safety
- Goal setting
- Communication Skills
(And did we mention some fun as well on the GO KARTS!)
Employment Support
Participants are also provided with vocational/employment support. Each site has a dedicated Employment Placement Worker to advise and assist participants in finding jobs, apprenticeships, traineeships, or further training. This includes assistance with finding work experience, developing a résumé, preparing for job interviews, and building networks within the automotive industry.
Bonus features
Hand Brake Turn staff help participants develop not only their practical skills but also their self-worth, dealing with personal issues and spiritual growth. Recreational activities are also part of the program, developing a holistic approach to mentoring and support.
Results
Over 80% of participants have graduated from the program. Approximately 40% have gained apprenticeships, and 74% have gone on to employment, further training or a return to education.
